Judging Books by Their Covers #6: Grass & Trees

Judging Books by Their Covers is a feature I do every once in a while to showcase some book covers. Each post, I choose one category and some book covers that fit into that category, and talk about whether or not I like those covers. You can read some earlier posts in this feature here.

The links will take you to the Goodreads pages.

Today's category is: Grass & Trees!

Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally
Stealing Parker by Miranda Kenneally

Jumping Off Swings by Jo Knowles
Paper Covers Rock by Jennifer Hubbard

Nothing Like You by Lauren Strasnick
When It Happens by Lauren Barnholdt

The Day Before by Lisa Schroeder
Between Here and Forever by Elizabeth Scott

I'm Not Her by Janet Gurtler
If I Tell by Janet Gurtler

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

Cracked Up to Be by Courtney Summers
All Unquiet Things by Anna Jarzab

Breaking Beautiful by Jennifer Shaw Wolf
The Babysitter Murders by Janet Ruth Young

Going Underground by Susan Vaught
Waiting by Carol Lynch Williams

The Little Woods by McCormick Templeman
Where I Belong by Gwendolyn Heasley

Meant to Be by Lauren Morril
Girl Meets Boy by Kelly Milner Halls

Wow, there are a lot of books to this theme - I wasn't expecting that many! I'm not sure about these covers. I like the ones that have something to do with the story, like Catching Jordan, Stealing Parker, Going Underground, and Jumping Off Swings, and some of these have an awesome atmosphere, like The Little Woods and All Unquiet Things. And some of these are just plain beautiful, like Meant to Be and Nothing Like You. But I think it's gotten a bit much - some of these are kind of boring and don't really say anything about the story.

What do you think of this cover theme?

If you have any other cover themes you'd like me to feature, let me know in the comments!

Judging Books By Their Covers #5: Beach & Ocean

Judging Books by Their Covers is a feature I do every once in a while to showcase some book covers. Each post, I choose one category and some book covers that fit into that category, and talk about whether or not I like those covers. You can read some earlier posts in this feature here.

The links will take you to the Goodreads pages.

Today's category is: Beach & Ocean!

Moonglass by Jessi Kirby
Invincible Summer by Hannah Moskowitz

That Summer by Sarah Dessen
Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen
(and some more Sarah Dessen books)

Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson
The Summer of No Regrets by Katherine Grace Bond

Jersey Angel by Beth Ann Bauman
Unbreak My Heart by Melissa Walker

Playing Hurt by Holly Schindler
Raw Blue by Kristy Eagar

The Story of Us by Deb Caletti
Stay by Deb Caletti
(and some more Deb Caletti books)

I'm kind of split on these books. I love how the beach-theme conveys such a summer-y feel and screams cute contemporary. And some of these, like Moonglass, Second Chance Summer, and The Story of Us, are really, really pretty. But I'm not a fan of all of these - I don't like the ones with bikini'd people, like Jersey Angel, The Summer of No Regrets, and Invincible Summer, because, well, I don't want to be seen in public with a book like that! In the end, the cute summer-y-ness (I know, great word) wins out, though, because I just love summer books!

What do you think of book covers showing the beach and the ocean?

If you have a type of cover you'd like me to feature on one of these posts, let me know!

Judging Books by Their Covers #4: Kissing & Hugging

Judging Books by Their Covers is a feature I do every once in a while to showcase some book covers. Each post, I choose one category and some book covers that fit into that category, and talk about whether or not I like those covers. You can read some earlier posts in this feature here.

The links will take you to the Goodreads pages.

Today's category is: kissing and hugging!

Kiss Crush Collide by Christina Meredith
Waiting by Carol Lynch Williams

The Summer of No Regrets by Katherine Grace Bond
My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles (and the rest of the books in this series)
While He Was Away by Karen Schreck

Forget You by Jennifer Echols (and most other books by Jennifer Echols)
Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry

Something Like Normal by Trish Doller
Not That Kind of Girl by Siobhan Vivian

Stay With Me by Paul Griffin
First Comes Love by Katie Kacvinsky

When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle

There are loads of book covers with people hugging or kissing. Loads. This is a long list I included here, and there are many, many more. And honestly? I'm not a fan. Most of the time, they don't tell you much about the story. And they're embarrassing to be seen reading in public. There are a few I like though - like Waiting, My Life Next Door, and The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight. I like when the people embracing are not as close to the camera - maybe that's just because I don't like faces on book covers in general, since I like being able to imagine what the MC looks like without some model on the cover influincing my imagination. That's why I like the covers for those three books, while I can't stand the ones for Not That Kind of Girl, When You Were Mine, and Forget You, for example.

What do you think of covers featuring people kissing or hugging? Which of these covers do you like or dislike?

Judging Books By Their Covers #3: Roads & Cars

Judging Books by Their Covers is a feature I do every once in a while to showcase some book covers. Each post, I choose one category and some book covers that fit into that category, and talk about whether or not I like those covers. You can read some earlier posts in this feature here.

Today's category is: roads and cars!

You Are Here by Jennifer E. Smith
Breaking Beautiful by Jennifer Shaw Wolf

In Honor by Jessi Kirby
The Lonely Hearts Club by Elizabeth Eulberg

The Princesses of Iowa by M. Molly Backes
Flirting In Italian by Lauren Henderson

Out of Reach by Carrie Jones
Two-Way Street by Lauren Barnholdt

Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles
Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

I'm not so sure of what I think of book covers with roads and cars. I usually like the actual book, since this cover trend goes hand in hand with the road trip trend, which I'm a huge fan of, but just the cover... I don't know. I don't really like the covers for Two-Way Street, Flirting in Italian, and The Princesses of Iowa - these covers are kind of boring, in my opinion. I love the covers for Out of Reach (stark and eye-catching) and You Are Here (simply beautiful), though, so this kind of cover can go either way with me.

What do you think of book covers featuring roads and cars? Which cover is your favorite?

Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler

The Summer of Firsts and Lasts by Terra Elan McVoy
Ex-Mas by Kate Brian

After the Kiss by Terra Elan McVoy
Love? Maybe by Heather Hepler

See You at Harry's by Jo Knowles
The Sweetest Thing by Christina Mandelski

Covers with candy seem very popular lately, especially candy-hearts. But I don't mind - I love books covers with candy! They always look delicious. The prettiest, in my opinion, is Bittersweet, but I like See You at Harry's best because of the connection to the actual story.
